What is an apprenticeship and how does it work?

An apprenticeship is a genuine employment in which you study, get experience, but also get paid.

You may start an apprenticeship whether you’re just starting out in your career, looking for a change, or want to advance in your existing position. You can start an apprenticeship even if you have a previous qualification, such as a degree.

You must be 16 or older, not currently enrolled in full-time study, and reside in England to become an apprentice. Each apprenticeship has a level and an education level that is comparable to it. An apprenticeship can begin at any level.

Over 170 sectors, including aerospace, banking, and fashion, provide apprenticeships.

Key advantages of apprenticeships:

  • Advance your career, study, and prepare for a certain job.
  • Earn money as you study and receive holiday leave.
  • You may make money while learning. That’s correct! There will be no student loans, tuition fees, or, ideally, debt. Your company will pay you a wage, and the government will usually cover the cost of your training for most young people.
  • An apprenticeship allows you to gain significant skills and experience in your chosen field, which will boost your CV and employability once you complete your training.
  • Acquire self-reliance and respect. Working at a firm will teach you to accept responsibility for your actions, how to behave in the workplace, and how to be self-sufficient in your activities.
  • Gain real-world work experience. Working life is very different from school or university, and an apprenticeship is a great way to ease into it while having people there to help you along the way. Your co-workers will be able to teach you the ins and outs of daily work life, so you’ll soon feel perfectly at home!

What you’ll study is determined on the role you’re preparing for. Apprentices in all roles, however, follow an authorised study programme, which means you’ll receive a nationally recognised certificate at the end of your apprenticeship.
