Every year on January 16, National Boston Day is held to commemorate Boston’s distinctive name. Everyone knows that Boston is one of the most historically rich cities in the United States, and here are some interesting facts about Boston you should know:

• Boston is named after a town in England. Many of Boston’s early settlers were from Boston, England, and chose to maintain the name.
• The first chocolate factory in the United States was in Boston.
• Boston was the site of the first American subway system.
• Christmas was once outlawed. Christmas could not be celebrated in Boston between 1659 and 1681. It was illegal because the Pilgrims considered it as a tainted holiday.
• Boston is home to the country’s first public beach.
• Some of Hollywood’s most well-known stars are Bostonians. Mark Wahlberg, Uma Thurman, Chris Evans, Madeline Kahn, Matt Damon, are all Boston natives.
• Boston is home to the nation’s oldest university.  Harvard is the country’s oldest university. It was founded in 1636 and is now regarded as one of the world’s most prominent educational institutions.
• Boston Harbor is home to the country’s first lighthouse. In 1716, the first lighthouse in the United States was built in Boston.
