Have you ever been to Lithuania?

Do you want to discover more about European culture and history?

  • Where is it? – It is a small and fascinating country in Northern Europe, on the Baltic Sea’s coast. Lithuania is a part of the European Union and the Schengen Zone, thus entrance is as simple as it is in the rest of Europe.
  • Language? – The national language is Lithuanian, nevertheless, English and Russian are widely spoken.
  • What is the currency in Lithuania? – Since 2015, the Lithuanian currency has been the euro. Many European nations utilise the euro.
  • Weather? – Lithuania offers the opportunity to experience all four seasons. If you visit Lithuania in the winter, you will almost certainly encounter snow, but be prepared for significantly lower temperatures. Temperatures can plummet to -20°C or lower! In Lithuania, it rains a lot in the spring and fall. Lithuanians like bright and sunny days throughout the summer. During the fall months, the weather is generally rather warm and pleasant, allowing you to spend time outside.

Lithuania is well-known for its landscapes, flatlands, forests, rivers and lakes.  Furthermore, there is the coastline with its sandy beaches where amber may be found. Lithuanian cuisine relies largely on root vegetables (potatoes and beetroots), meat, and dairy products.

Let’s begin with Lithuania’s national dishes:

  • Cepelinai (Zeppelins) – Cepelinai are enormous dumplings composed of raw and cooked potato dough that are filled with pork and drenched in a sour cream and bacon sauce.
  • Chilled Borscht (Saltibarsciai) – beet and kefir soup is served with hardboiled eggs and boiled potatoes. Notably, cooled borscht is a vibrant pink colour!
  • Potato pancakes (Bulviniai blynai) – are an easy meal to create, consisting of shredded potatoes, onion, and eggs combined and cooked in oil. They are accompanied by dill, onions, and sour cream.
  • Kibinai – excellent hand pies. Kibinai is a popular snack or side to accompany soup, with a flaky, soft crust containing meat, veggies, or cheese curd.
  • Fried Bread (Kepta duona) – is a Lithuanian black rye bread that has been fried in oil and seasoned with garlic and salt before being served with cheese sauce. Fried bread is a traditional comfort meal that brings back pleasant memories for many Lithuanians and is usually consumed as a snack to accompany beer.
  • Kugelis – is a substantial baked potato pudding with meat that is frequently served with bacon, or sour cream. As with other Lithuanian cuisines, recipes vary from person to person, therefore a slice of kugelis may differ from one location to the next, making it a fascinating dish to eat.
