Tourism has a lengthy history. While we may not have always had planes or sumptuous cruise ships, people have always wanted to be tourists. 

The history of tourism may be traced back to technical advancements in transportation. The more airports that open, the more areas people will be able to fly to. The more roads that are created, the more areas people will be able to drive to. People have always had a desire to travel, whether to explore and discover new areas or simply for pleasure. Tourism specifically addresses the latter. 

• Linguists believe that the term “journey” was first used in the 14th century. People, on the other hand, began travelling far earlier. 
• People have been travelling since the dawn of time. Early travel motivations were food, water, safety, or trading. However, the concept of leisure or exploratory travel quickly evolved. 
• The contemporary notion of tourism can be traced back to the 17th century, when young aristocrats from western and northern European countries embarked on what was known as the Grand Tour: a travel throughout Europe with the primary goal of soaking up history, art, and cultural heritage. It was thought to be the ideal method of education. 
• Thomas Cook is credited with inventing modern tourism. Cook organised a journey from Market Harborough to Loughborough for a temperance meeting on July 5, 1841, and tourism was born. Cook is credited with inventing modern tourism.
