Interview with Kate Harland, Graduate Tutor and Programme Leader for Business with Tourism Management BA (Hons) at Northumbria University and member of the ITT Education & Training Committee.
Tell me something about yourself?
“I am an academic at Northumbria University, an ITT Education and Training Committee member and proud dog mama to an adopted Jack Russell named Chase. My previous career was in hospitality for 14 years, mainly in sales and event management roles.”
What are your responsibilities?
“In my academic role I am a programme leader for Business with Tourism Management, module tutor for modules at level 5 and 6, personal tutor to tourism students, dissertation supervisor to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and I lead the annual Northumbria ITT Future You conference. While doing all of this I have also been completing my PhD too! It is a varied, busy, but very rewarding job. No single day is the same, which is great.”
What do you like or dislike about your job?
“I love my academic role, but I do miss working in hospitality with my team. There are a lot of transferable skills from hospitality that can be applied to academia, which has been a great help to me as it was quite a big career change. “
What are you passionate about?
“Sharing knowledge, encouraging and mentoring students, and advocating careers in the hospitality and tourism industry.”
What are your Goals for the Future?
“My goal is to enjoy what I do, 100% of the time.”
