  • Lithuanian language is the most ancient language in the world.
  • Lithuania is a natural wonderland. Forests encompass one-third of the country and include several protected areas, natural reserves, and national parks.
    • Lithuania is also known as “the country of storks,” as our national bird is a stork.
  • The oldest tree in Europe – in Lithuania, there is an oak that has survived the Crusades. The Stelmuze oak is Europe’s oldest tree.
  • Basketball is the most popular sport in Lithuania, and it is regarded to be our people’s second religion. Lithuania is the world’s fourth best basketball team, having won three bronze medals in the Olympics.
    • Jonas Valanciunas, Mindaugas Kuzminskas, Domas Sabonis, and the great Arvydas Sabonis, who played for the Portland Trail Blazers, are among the top players.
  • Many prominent individuals from across the world have Lithuanian ancestors. To mention a few, Bob Dylan, the famed American singer, musician and actor, was of Lithuanian-Jewish descent. Anthony Kiedis, the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers grandfather was Lithuanian. Jason Sudeikis, a well-known American actor and comedian, is a quarter Lithuanian, and his surname is Lithuanian.
  • Very superstitious – Lithuania is home to a plethora of age-old superstitions that are being practised today. Here’s few:
    • Never make an introduction or shake hands over a threshold. Never whistle inside – whistling inside will unwittingly ‘invite small devils’ to arrive!
    • Someone is criticising you if your ears are hot and red.
    • If a knife falls to the floor, it indicates that you will soon receive a male visitor. A female visitor will pay you a visit if a fork falls.
    • If swallows are flying low to the ground it will soon rain.
  • Here’s a truly Lithuanian truth you’ll appreciate, they adore hot air balloons!
  • One of Lithuania’s most prominent characteristics is that it has one of the world’s fastest internet speeds.
  • Cepelinai is one of the most well-known Lithuanian foods. It got its name from its oval form, which resembles a Zeppelin airship.
  • Lithuanians commemorate two independence days:
    • One on February 16.
    • Another on March 11, the Day of the Restoration of Independence.
  • For many years, Lithuania was dependent on Russia – they were a part of the Soviet Union.
    • Lithuania declared its independence in March 1990, and Russia recognised it a year and a half later.
  • Lithuania offers some of the most affordable healthcare in Europe. Everyone, including citizens and permanent residents, is entitled to free medical care, including ambulatory treatments. In state-funded health care centres, outpatient services like as general practise, maternity and childcare, and dental care are accessible.
  • Surprisingly, no severe swear words exist in Lithuanian.
    • When they need to cuss, Lithuanians use Russian, or English swear words.
