What is adventure tourism?

Adventure tourism is defined as tourism that includes any type of action or adventure. It is especially relevant to those that involve risk or need substantial planning.

Young travellers enjoy adventure tourism the most. Much of the thrill in adventure tourism stems from allowing travellers to move outside of their comfort zone. Adventure tourists anticipate varying levels of risk, thrill, and tranquillity.

  • Adventure travel is a recreational activity that takes place in a strange, exotic, distant, or wilderness location. It is usually connected with high amounts of activity on the part of the person, with the majority of it taking place outside. It includes physical activity, cultural exchange, or activities in nature.
  • There are two types of adventure tourism:
    • soft adventure and hard adventure.
  • In nature, hard adventure activities are extremely risky and dangerous. For example :
    • sky diving, mountain climbing, ice climbing.
  • Soft adventure is less dangerous compared to hard adventure activities:
    • safaris, hunting, fishing, surfing, camping.

Adventure tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments of the tourist industry, drawing high-value clients, boosting local economies, and encouraging environmentally friendly behaviours. Adventure tourism creates direct jobs in the lodging, transportation, and travel agency or tour operator sectors.
