What skills are needed to be a ship captain?

Being a ship’s captain provides plenty of opportunities for travel. If you enjoy guiding and travelling and are interested in maritime abilities, a job as a ship’s captain might be a rewarding one for you.

  • Leadership, self-assurance, and solidity – being a great captain entails being a strong leader who is self-assured, powerful, and competent in his duty. Everyone on the ship must rely on you to make major choices when they arise.
  • Rigging and knots – mastering how to tie knots and rig your boat is critical for the safety of you, your passengers, and the vessel itself.
  • Communicating – communication with your crew and passengers is critical for ship safety and leading. During an emergency, you will also need to provide them instructions or solicit their participation in some instances.
  • Safety skills – the captain’s role involves adequately informing passengers on safety procedures. You must be prepared for unexpected scenarios and maintain everyone calm in an emergency. This assists everyone in understanding their jobs, safety protocols, and day-to-day planning. It will also guarantee that everyone on deck understands what to do and can react appropriately if something goes wrong.

Did you know that women make up fewer than 2% of all seafarers? One of the best known is Captain Kate McCue, the first female American captain of a commercial cruise liner! You can watch Captain Kate McCue on Instagram here @captainkatemccue.
